Christmas in Ohio is a time of magic and wonder, with snowflakes falling outside and the warmth of holiday gatherings inside. There are seasonal decorations everywhere, contributing to the whimsical feeling the holiday season gives. But amidst all the festivities, it’s easy to overlook important safety measures for your HVAC system. With so many items and decorations placed in and around the home, it’s easy to get caught up and forget that we need to be mindful of where these items are placed so as not to impede the functionality of our HVAC system. So, Grove City Heating & Air is here to remind you that by taking some simple precautions, you can ensure a cozy and safe holiday season for you and your loved ones.
1. Be Mindful of Flammable Decorations
When decorating for Christmas, it’s important to remember that some items are flammable. So, please take extra to make sure things like paper decorations, wrapped packages, and blankets are not near heat sources such as fireplaces or candles. It’s common to use these elements this time of the year, so just make sure nothing is near them that will create a fire hazard. Furthermore, if you use these heating elements, make sure to properly extinguish them before leaving the house or going to bed.
2. Avoid Covering the Thermostat
As you “deck the halls” with festive decorations, be mindful of where they’re placed. You want to avoid covering or obstructing your thermostat. This is because if there is anything placed on top of, around, or in front of the thermostat, it could inaccurately read the temperature in your home. When this happens, it could lead to the improper reading of your home’s temperature and result in miscommunication with the furnace, which will ultimately affect how much heat is distributed throughout your house. Therefore, we think it is best to refrain from placing any extra objects in front of or near your thermostat.
3. Keep Vents Clear and Clean
Another thing you should watch out for is your HVAC vents. Often, bulky items like the Christmas tree, for example, are put in places temporarily just for the sake of the season. But keep in mind that be it temporary, it’s still important to make sure your vents remain unobstructed. Blocked vents can disrupt the airflow and lead to HVAC issues, which is the last thing you need.
4. Protect Your Condenser
While your condenser (outdoor unit) is built to withstand harsh weather conditions and is not currently in use, it’s still a good idea to take some precautions during winter. It’s a good idea to periodically verify that the area around your condenser remains clear of any loose debris, such as leaves, twigs, and other outdoor items. This is because snowfall and ice buildup, paired with loose debris or outdoor items, can cause damage to the unit. And since the condenser is not used in the winter, you may not realize it until spring. One added tip is that you can use a condenser cover to help protect your outdoor unit.
