Discovering Grove City, Ohio
This Central Ohio city has a population of about 41,820 people. Back in the 1920s, Grove City was a popular tourist destination well-known for its horse races. It is a suburban city close to Columbus, in Franklin County that was founded in 1852.
Up until the mid-19th century, the area was a part of Ohio’s vast frontier wilderness that was packed full of oak trees, maple trees, beech trees, walnut trees, dogwood trees and other native trees and wild foliage. The area’s first European settler, historians say, was Hugh Grant. Grant operated a gristmill in Pittsburgh. He would transport goods down the Ohio River to sell and after selling everything would return to Pittsburgh. They say he would make the return journey back to his home in Pennsylvania on foot. During one of these trips, in 1803, he passed through the Scioto Valley area and ended up purchasing the land that would become Grove City.
Eventually, Grove City’s official founder, a man named William F. Breck, bought 15.25 acres of the farmland that was owned by Hugh Grant, Jr., which was the son of the first settler in Jackson Township. Breck eventually added 300 more acres to his original purchase to use for farming in the area. However, his plans changed when he realized the potential for growth in the area. At the time, the Harrisburg Turnpike passed through the area and went all the way to the state capital, which was Columbus. Breck was said to have seen the potential of the land. He envisioned a new village of its own that would have its own church, school, stores, blacksmith shop and carpenter shop. Breck formed a commission with William Sibray, George Weygandt, and Jeremiah Smith. They laid out the village of Grove City in 1852 on the east side of Broadway in 1852.
