How to Stay Cool with a Broken AC

Jul 1, 2024

If your AC has broken down out of nowhere, you might, in fact, feel like you’re melting under the scorching summer sun of Ohio. Hopefully, by now you’ve already called yours truly, Grove City Heating & Air, as we offer 24-hour emergency services throughout the year. Our dedicated NATE-certified technicians are available 365 days a year to provide excellent customer service, especially when you need it the most! Please, trust us to come as soon we are able to, but while you are waiting for your technician to arrive, you may be uncomfortable and looking for ways to keep you and your family cooled down (as much as possible.)

  • Set Your Ceiling Fans Counter-clockwise
  • Close Your Blinds and Drapes
  • Limit Opening Exterior Doors
  • Open Windows at Night
  • Avoid Heat-inducing Appliances
  • DIY Temporary AC

Here’s how you can stay cool in the meantime:

  1. Set Your Ceiling Fans Counter-clockwise: Typically, most ceiling fans are already set to a clockwise rotation. This direction of the fan blades pushes the air downwards, allowing for a cool breeze effect when your AC is working. However, in this particular instance, since your AC is not working, try setting your ceiling fans to counterclockwise. This pulls up the cool air and disperses it around the room, making it a bit more bearable without a working air conditioner. Don’t know where the switch is to change this setting? Normally you can find the switch on the base of your ceiling fan to change the blade direction.
  1. Close Your Blinds and Drapes: Doing this will help to exclude sunlight, and keep it out of your home. So, be sure to close all your blinds, drapes, and any sort of window treatments. Remember to close all windows too; a cross-breeze in the daytime does little to keep the warm air out.
  1. Limit Opening Exterior Doors: If you can refrain from doing so, try to minimize the entry of warm air by keeping front, back, basement, and garage doors closed as much as possible. You don’t want to let whatever cool air you have remaining in your house outside and on the same note, you don’t want any of that unwanted warm air creeping in.
  1. Open Windows at Night: The evening dip in temperatures can help cool your home. So, don’t be afraid to open your windows in the evening to help keep you cooled down. Just remember that they need to be closed again in the morning.
  1. Avoid Heat-inducing Appliances: One thing to note is that using appliances like stove, dryer, and dishwasher will only contribute in raising your home’s temperature. So, try to avoid using them if possible while you are waiting for your AC to get fixed!
  1. DIY Temporary AC: This last tip is admittedly a tad “creative.” But when creativity meets innovation, that’s when results happen. You can actually make your own makeshift AC by placing a large bowl of ice in front of an electric fan. The fan will blow air over the ice, cooling down the air as it passes over it. You can sit in front of this innovative design and kick up your feet while we do all the hard work to get your AC back up and running!
